Winter weather postpones Southwest Stakes

HOT SPRINGS — The $300,000 Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park has been postponed because of snow and ice accumulation across Arkansas.

It's the third time since 2006 the annual race has been moved because of wintry weather. Track officials say the 1 1/16-mile Kentucky Derby prep race will be rescheduled for next weekend at a time to be determined.

Far Right, trained by Ron Moquett, was a 3-1 favorite for the projected 11-horse field, with the D. Wayne Lukas-trained Mr. Z second in the early betting at 7-2. The two horses finished ahead of the other once in two previous meetings, with Far Right last winning the $150,000 Smarty Jones Stakes on Jan. 19.

Steve Asmussen-trained Tapiture won the Southwest Stakes last year. The race offers 10 Kentucky Derby qualifying points to the winner.
