Political educator to give LR speech

The executive director of the Jesse M. Unruh Institute of Politics at the University of Southern California will speak Thursday at the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service.

Dan Schnur -- a former political and media strategist for candidates including U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and California Republican Gov. Pete Wilson -- works to motivate students to become involved in politics, government and public service. He teaches classes in politics, communications and leadership.

In 2010, Schnur was appointed chairman of the California Fair Political Practices Commission. During his tenure, he implemented campaign finance disclosure requirements for independent committees, appointed a bipartisan task force to update California's 1978 Political Reform Act, and worked to assure fair elections, government transparency and the disclosure of campaign finance and spending practices.

In 2014, Schnur ran for statewide office as a nonpartisan candidate for California secretary of state, the first candidate to run for statewide office as an independent.

Seats for the 6 p.m. lecture at Sturgis Hall in Little Rock can be reserved by emailing publicprograms@clintonschool.uasys.edu or calling (501) 683-5239.
