River Trail to detour around NLR bridge

A change in the Arkansas River Trail in North Little Rock is scheduled to start today, weather permitting, in preparation for construction of a new Broadway Bridge.

The River Trail passes beneath the bridge. The change starting at Riverfront Park for walkers, bicyclists and joggers going west will detour trail users through an opening in the river wall to Riverfront Drive and continue left on Karrot Street, then continue onto Smarthouse Way before rejoining the River Trail.

North Little Rock Traffic Services has added a temporary pedestrian crosswalk and signs at Karrot Street and have re-striped crosswalks at Willow Street to help with directions and safety.

The change and installation of detour signs are scheduled to take place today, but could be delayed until early next week because of sleet or snow forecast for overnight and early this morning, city spokesman Nathan Hamilton said.

The Broadway Bridge over the Arkansas River between Little Rock and North Little Rock is to be demolished and closed to traffic for six months beginning in May 2016. Preliminary construction on the main span and arch is to begin this spring.
