SUN BELT CONFERENCE

ARKANSAS STATE 8, LOUISVILLE 2

Arkansas State (3-1) used a six-run third inning Friday to knock off No. 12 Louisville (2-2) in frigid conditions at the Perfect Game Park South Complex in Emerson, Ga.

The Red Wolves jumped on Louisville starter Kyle Funkhouser in the top of the third inning after he hit two batters and walked another to load the bases with one out with ASU already leading 1-0. Joe Schrimpf extended the lead to 3-0 with a line-drive single to center field and Jeremy Brown reached on a fielder’s choice that the Cardinals didn’t get an out on because of a bad throw from shortstop to second base to load the bases again.

Ty White then ripped a 1-0 pitch down the first-base line that Louisville first baseman Danny Rosenbaum kept on the infield but couldn’t glove, which allowed Tanner Ring to score for a 4-0 advantage. Austin Baker followed two batters later with a hard ground ball back up the middle to drive in two more, and White scored on an error to give the Red Wolves a 7-0 lead.

The Red Wolves added another run in the top of the eighth when Tim Seldomridge scored on Stuart Levy’s sacrifice fly to make it 8-2.

Coulton Lee pitched a scoreless bottom half of the eighth and was relieved in the ninth by Colton Kibler, who walked the first batter he faced but induced a 6-4-3 double play and a fly-out to center field to end the game.

David Owen worked 5 2/3 innings and picked up the victory, allowing 2 runs on 8 hits with 5 walks and 4 strikeouts.

Ring had three hits, while Baker and Zach George had two hits each.

Four Iowa pitchers held UALR to four hits and the Hawkeyes (3-1) had a season-high 10 hits as the Trojans (1-3) lost their third consecutive game Friday at QuikTrip Park in Grand Prairie, Texas.

UALR starter Cory Malcom (0-1) struck out five and allowed two earned runs, but the Trojans’ hitters struggled.
