SATURDAY’S STARS

Channing Hill was the only jockey or trainer to win two races Saturday. Hill won the seventh for trainer Steve Margolis aboard Mr. Tickle ($6) and with California Coast ($11) in the ninth for trainer Wayne Catalano. Leading trainer Federico Villanfranco (12) won the sixth race with class-dropper Ribbon of Darkness ($7.40) but lost the horse to Bret Calhoun, who won a nine-way shake to take the horse for $20,000 in optional claiming-allowance race.

THE SPRING FEVER

Spring Included finished the deal this time. The 4-year-old filly by Include led from wire to deep stretch in the $100,000 American Beauty Stakes at 6 furlongs Jan. 24 before settling for second. The 5½ -furlong distance of the Spring Fever might have worked in her favor this time, as she tracked the early pace set by long shot Gratzie before taking the lead on the turn and drawing away for jockey Joe Rocco Jr., trainer Steve Hobby and owner Alex Lieblong. The victory was the fourth in 11 career starts for Spring Included, who increased her career earnings to $240,097. Spring Included, the 5-2 favorite, paid $7.20 to win. She finished 1¾ lengths ahead of second-place finisher Heykittykitty, who nosed out American Beauty winner Haveyougoneaway. The winning time was 1:04.96 on a sloppy track, after fractions of 22.49 for a quarter, 46.71 for a half mile and 58.63 for 5 furlongs.

FINAL FURLONG

Raagheb, who crossed the finish line second in the seventh race for maiden allowance fillies, was disqualified and placed ninth after stewards ruled Raagheb impeded ninth-place finisher Rue de Grande with a half-mile to run in the race at 1 1/16 miles. Rue de Grande appeared to take a bad step and stumble as Raagheb, ridden by Emmanuel Esquivel and trained by Danny Peitz, was moving by on the inside. Rue de Grande was ridden by Joe Johnson, who lodged the objection. … The track was listed the track as sloppy (sealed) for all nine races. … 2-year-old filly champion Take Charge Brandi worked a 5-furlong bullet (1:00.40) — fastest of the morning at that distance — in preparation for the Grade III $150,000 Honeybee Stakes on March 7 for Hall of fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas. Take Charge Brandi, owned by Arkansan Willis Horton of Marshall, opened 2015 with a head victory in the $100,000 Martha Washington Stakes on Jan. 31.

ROAD TO DERBY ROUNDUP

Itsaknockout won the $400,000 Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream Park on Saturday after first-place finisher Upstart was disqualified to second after a steward’s inquiry and jockey objection. Itsaknockout earned 50 points toward becoming eligible for the Kentucky Derby. The top 20 points earners in designated races will be eligible for the May 2 race at Churchill Downs. Upstart, ridden by Jose Ortiz, beat Itsaknockout by 2¾ lengths. Jockey Luis Saez lodged an objection against Upstart, whom the stewards concluded had drifted out and obstructed Itsaknockout. Itsaknockout paid $12.80, $5 and $4.00. ...At Fair Grounds in New Orleans, International Star, trained by Michael Maker and ridden by Miguel Mena, rallied to edge War Story by 2 ¾ lengths Saturday in the Grade II Risen Star Stakes. Second-place jockey Kent Desormeaux unsuccessfully claimed foul against Mena for interference on the clubhouse turn.
