Community board meeting cancelled

The Pulaski County Special School District's Community Advisory Board canceled its Monday meeting because of inclement weather.

The board's regular monthly meeting was canceled last week also because of inclement weather.

During Monday's meeting, Superintendent Jerry Guess was set to ask the advisory board to back a plan to ask voters for a 5.6-mill tax increase at the Sept. 15 school election. Revenue from the tax increase would help finance districtwide construction and renovation, including two new high school buildings.

Guess also planned to ask the advisory board to opine on proposals to close Scott Elementary in the eastern part of the county and Northwood Middle in the Gravel Ridge area for the 2015-16 school year. After the advisory board makes its recommendation, the decision will lay in the hands of state Education Commissioner Tony Wood, who is an acting leader for state-controlled school districts.

Staff have said the closures will help to lower the district's expenses and to offset enrollment losses.

The Jacksonville/North Pulaski School District broke away from the Pulaski County Special district, but it is still operating under the direction of the Pulaski County Special district until the parties agree to divvy up personnel, students, assets and debt.

The new district has expressed interest in using the Northwood building, should Pulaski County Special officials decide to shutter it.
