ASU wins Sun Belt men’s team title

The Arkansas State men’s team won five individual titles Tuesday in Birmingham, Ala., to jump three spots and earn the Sun Belt Conference indoor track and field team title for the first time since 2007.

It was ASU’s first outright title since 2000.

The Red Wolves entered Tuesday in fourth place and without an individual champion. But Richard Chavez defended his shot put title with a throw of 64 feet, 4 inches, Roelf Pienaar won the triple jump with a jump of 51-11.25, Joey Meyer won the 400-meter dash in 47.44 seconds and William Oliver won the heptathlon with 5,299 points.

ASU’s women’s team finished second, 30 points behind Texas State. Kristina Knott won the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.04 seconds, and Alexandra Pevtsova won the pole vault by clearing 12-01.75.

UALR’s women’s team finished seventh. Emma Dahl earned all 28 of UALR’s points and was named the top women’s scorer. Dahl won the 1,600 meters in 4:57 and was second in the 5,000. Her 28 points set a school record for a conference meet.

The UALR men’s team finished eighth with 22 points.

BASEBALL

Red Wolves’ Zuber honored by Sun Belt

Arkansas State sophomore starter Tyler Zuber was named Tuesday as the Sun Belt Conference’s pitcher of the week.

Zuber, from White Hall, pitched eight shutout innings Saturday in a 4-1 victory over Louisville. He held the Cardinals to 2 singles and struck out 3 while walking 2.

GOLF

ASU ninth at Florida tournament

Arkansas State’s women’s team finished ninth with a 36-hole total of 623 at the Amelia Island Collegiate, which saw its final round rained out Tuesday in Fernandina Beach, Fla.

The Red Wolves posted an opening-round 312 Monday at Amelia National Golf Club. They were led by Megan Garland, who shot a combined 146 to finish ninth. She shot a 72 for the first 18 holes and followed with a 74 in the second round.

Sarah Childers and Emma Miller tied for 37th and 58th place, respectively. Childers shot a 155 (78-77) and Miller finished with a 160 (80-80). Maci Arrington tied for 66th at 163 (83-80), and Abi Laker was 71st at 166 (82-84).

UALR’s Resen captures medalist honors

UALR’s Stina Resen earned medalist honors for the first time in her career Tuesday at the South Alabama Women’s Invitational at Azaela City Golf Club in Mobile, Ala.

Resen, who finished 5-over-par 221, shot a 1-under 71 in Monday’s second round and finished four shots ahead of runner-up Michaela Fletcher of Memphis. She shot 75 in the first and third rounds.

UALR finished third with a combined score of 928. Memphis won at 915.

Sofie Kvarnstrom tied for 16th at 18 over par. Sabrina Bonanno shot 19 over par and finished tied for 18th. Melodie Jean Dit Berthelot finished 37th at 28 over par.

UCA women tie for first

The University of Central Arkansas women’s team finished tied for first with Lamar on Tuesday at the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Classic at Corpus Christi Country Club.

Fernando Lira tied for first individually but finished third in the playoff. Lira shot 79-72 for a 7-over-par 151 to tie three others for the overall lead.

UCA shot 312-301 (613), while Lamar shot 307-306.

Brenda Gonzalez shot a 154 (76-78) and finished 13th. Malin Senneryd shot 155 (81-74) and tied for 14th, while Kendra Mann shot 76-81 (157) and tied for 23rd. Frida Svensson shot 81-77 (158) to tie for 27th.

BASKETBALL

Arkansas Baptist defeats Crowley’s Ridge

Chris Jornet led the Arkansas Baptist College Buffaloes with 20 points in a 126-65 rout of the Crowley Ridge College junior varsity team Tuesday in Paragould.

Arkansas Baptist (18-10) ran off to a 64-35 halftime lead. Fred Albright added 19 points for Arkansas Baptist, Dexter Porchia and Latron Thomas scored 15 each and Keno Jones had 12.
