MovieStyle: Popularity watch

More than anything else, the annual Academy Awards telecast demonstrates the real gap between the movies that win Oscars and the movies that people go see.

For instance, in just two weeks Fifty Shades of Grey has surpassed the combined box office of seven of the eight Best Picture nominees. (The outlier is American Sniper, which, FYI, has made a lot of money.)

So in this week's MovieStyle, our Piers Marchant goes deep into the erotic drama that still tops the box office lists (even though it fell off 70 percent after its first week), while Philip Martin explains how the Academy plan to get more blockbusters into its annual show backfired.

And Dan Lybarger talks with one of the stars of The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, Arkansas native Rodger Bumpass.

Oh, and Martin also reviews the long-awaited bio-pic Mr. Turner, while Marchant handles the honors on the Will Smith flimflam movie Focus.

Also opening is The Lazarus Effect, which didn't screen for critics.
