Anti-Islamic protesters shout at Muslims at Oklahoma Capitol

OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma Muslims coming to the state Capitol to learn more about their government are being met by about two dozen anti-Islamic protesters.

The state chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations expected more than 100 people to attend Friday's event designed to foster civic participation by Oklahoma Muslims.

Some protesters shouted anti-Islamic rhetoric at visitors outside the building's north entrance. Others held signs with inflammatory anti-Muslim language.

A similar event at the state Capitol in Texas earlier this year drew a small group of protesters who heckled participants.

The conservative groups Overpasses for America and III Percent Patriots of Oklahoma reserved space at the Capitol to protest Muslim Day, while a Libertarian group rallied in support.
