One dies in big-rig pileup in Washington County

A Wisconsin man was killed Wednesday night in a four-vehicle, chain-reaction pileup in Washington County, Arkansas State Police said.

A 2013 Volvo traveling north on Interstate 49 ran off the roadway and re-entered it, overturning and spilling its load of lumber, at mile-marker 57 south of Fayetteville, state police reported. A 2014 Freightliner traveling north slowed down to avoid the wreck and was rear-ended by a 2013 Mack.

Billy Kramer Jr., 48, of Sparta, Wis., was driving north in a 2011 Peterbilt when his rig collided with the Mack truck and the lumber on the roadway, killing Kramer, state police said. The wreck occurred at 9:59 p.m. Wednesday.

A passenger in Kramer's rig, Irene Kramer, 63, of Sparta, and the driver of the Volvo, Mark Newswander, 48, of Harrison were injured and transported to Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville, according to state police.

The driver of the Freightliner, Gary Meyer, 52, of Imperial, Mo., and the driver of the Mack, Johnny Scialabba, 52, of Watts, Okla., were not injured, state police reported.

Conditions were clear and the road was dry at the time of the wreck, state police said.
