Beginning at 9 a.m. Monday, the bridge between Riverfront Drive and Rebsamen Park Road will be closed to all traffic, including motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians.

The bridge will undergo "extensive repairs" to its abutments and supports, a news release said. This is the first work being done on the bridge since it was built in the 1970s, city Civil Engineering Manager Mike Hood said.

Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department inspectors recommended the repairs.

"Those supports were getting very old and rusty and no longer were in the correct position they should be in. They were never a danger to vehicles, but it is something that's going to have to be addressed," Hood said.

He said the project will cost almost $500,000. It includes jacking up both ends of the bridge and adding supports, redoing where the steel supports touch the ground, and painting. The funding will come from sales-tax revenue designated for public works projects.

Barricades, warning signs and message boards will be placed on Cantrell Road to inform drivers of the closure and signal them instead to a detour route that will take them to the intersection of Riverfront Drive and Cantrell Road.

A news release said the work is estimated to last six weeks.
