Oaklawn receives OK to add 2 days to racing season

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. — The Arkansas Racing Commission has unanimously approved a request by Oaklawn to add two Wednesdays to its 2015 racing season to compensate for days lost to weather.

Oaklawn official Eric Jackson says adding March 18 and March 25 is trying "to make the best of a bad situation."

The winter weather during the past two weeks has been brutal throughout the region and has wreaked havoc with racing fans, jockeys, the grounds and local businesses that depend on income from activities at Oaklawn.

The two additional days will result in a 53-day race season if there are no additional cancellations.

The 2015 live season continues through Saturday, April 11, when it culminates with the $1 million Arkansas Derby and three other stakes.
