An unwanted lesson

The young man was giddy all week. Snow days, snow days! Even when it wasn't snowing! The school board had anticipated a snow storm one

day (correctly, as it turned out) and announced school closings 24 hours in advance.

What a wonderful week in February! What a wonderful week in Arkansas! The young man, a fifth-grader, strutted around the house, chirping about his luck.

After several hours of this, one adult warned him that he’d pay for all this in June.

Wha-?

Oh, yes, the days that you miss in February— snow days—will likely be tacked on to the school year, and you’ll have to make them up in the summer. Which means you’ll get out of school later this year than usual. So far—and only so far—you’ll probably have to go to school a week longer come June.

Then the young man put on his coat, and joined his friends on the ice—maybe a little wiser.

It may have been an unwanted lesson, but one all must learn:

Nothing’s free, kids. Nothing’s free.
