Loaded gun found by TSA at Memphis airport

MEMPHIS — Transportation Security Administration officials say a loaded gun has been found at Memphis International Airport.

The agency said a Beretta 9mm handgun was discovered in a passenger's carry-on bag at a security checkpoint Monday.

Transportation Security Administration workers alerted airport police, who took possession of the bag and cited the passenger on local charges.

Firearms are prohibited in carry-on bags. They can be transported in checked baggage, provided they are declared to the airline, in a proper carrying case and not loaded.

It was first firearm discovered by TSA officers at the Memphis airport this year. A total of 23 firearms were found at the airport's checkpoints in 2014, up from 18 in 2013.
