Mothwind, Velvet Kente Arkestra to play LR shows

Mothwind will headline a three-band show at Vino's at 8 p.m. Friday, with Terminus opening, followed by Hell Camino.

Mothwind, based in Little Rock and formed in 2012, calls itself a progressive metal band. The group, which released the album In the Clutches of the Novae on Oct. 4, features members who are from the bands Vore, Underclaire and Holy Angell: Mike Mullins on guitar, Jeremy Partin on bass and Kevin Rains on drums.

Terminus is based in Fayetteville and Hell Camino formed in Conway.

The Velvet Kente Arkestra will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Ron Robinson Theater.

The Velvet Kente Arkestra is an expanded version of the band Velvet Kente, led by Joshua Asante. The Arkestra's influences include blues, indie rock, punk and Afro-Caribbean music. Asante also leads local rock band Amasa Hines, which released a debut album, All the World There Is, in 2014.

John Moreland performs at the White Water Tavern, plus opening acts Caleb Caudle and Aaron Lee Tasjan, at 9 p.m. today.

Moreland, who grew up in Tulsa, is now based in Norman, Okla. He has released five studio albums, plus several EPs, and has opened shows for Jason Isbell and Lucero. Rachel Maddow of MSNBC has said of Moreland: "If the American music business made any sense, guys like John Moreland would be household names."

Admission is $10.

Whale Fire headlines an 8 p.m. Friday show with opening acts Dividend and Listen Sister.

Considered a "dream pop" band, Whale Fire, based in Little Rock, released its debut album, Before You Run, in May 2013.

Admission is $7.

Big E & The Mississippi Boys will toast the fact that Elvis Presley would have turned 80 today with a show at 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

"Big E" Atkinson discovered the music of Elvis at the age of 8 and has since continued his love for The King, especially the sequined jumpsuit era of Presley in the 1970s. His band includes musicians from numerous Memphis area bands: the River City Tanlines, Neckbones, Preacher's Kids, Blue Mountain and Jack O & the Tennessee Tearjerkers.

Matthew Huff will headline an 8:30 p.m. show Saturday at the Revolution Room with opening acts The Gable Bradley Band and Stuart Thomas.

Huff, a singer-songwriter who grew up a fan of country music in Mammoth Spring, released a debut album, Strong, in 2010, followed by Reflection in 2013 and Give It All I Got in 2014.

Alternative metal rockers Nothing More will perform, along with three opening acts, at 8 p.m. today at Juanita's.

Nothing More, based in San Antonio, is touring to promote its latest album, Mr. MTV. Wovenwar is touring with the group, and two more bands will also open: SwitchbacH and More Than Sparrows.

Mary Timony (Helium, Wild Flag, Autoclave) leads power pop trio Ex Hex, which released its debut album, Rips, in October.

Maxine's in Hot Springs will present Rev. Horton Heat, plus opening act Jane Rose and the Deadend Boys, at 9 p.m. today.

Rev. Horton Heat, based in Dallas, first formed his rockabilly trio in 1985. He has released 11 albums, the latest of which, Rev, came out Jan. 21, 2014.

Admission is $15.

Saturday, the club will present The Brothel Sprouts, a Fayetteville band that released a debut EP, Good Enough, in October.

Admission is $5.
