Benton man arrested in Friday night shooting

A Benton man was arrested after purportedly shooting a Benton woman Friday night, police say.

Benton police responded to the Saline Memorial Hospital emergency room about 9 p.m. Friday where a woman told officers she had been shot by Roderick Spears, 21, of Benton, Benton Police Department spokesman Lt. Kevin Russell said in a statement.

The victim told police she was shot when she drove by a residence at the corner of Tulane and Princeton streets.

The victim, whose name was not released by police, claimed a bullet hit her in the arm, Russell said.

Spears and the victim knew each other prior to the shooting, according to police.

Officers arrested Spears later that night and transported him to the Saline County jail. He is charged with first degree battery, possession of a firearm by certain persons and committing a terroristic act.

Spears is also a parolee of the Arkansas Department of Community Corrections and is being held on a warrant from that agency, Russell said.
