International Star and jockey Miguel Mena appeared boxed in with nowhere to run as the horses raced into the stretch of Saturday’s Grade III LeComte Stakes at Fair Grounds in New Orleans. But Mena maneuvered the 3-year-old son of Fusaichi Pegasus outside his competition and the colt accelerated in the deep stretch to win the 3-year-old Derby prep race by 2½ lengths over War Story, who edged out Tiznow R J for second. Eagle, the 7-2 betting favorite, came in seventh, beaten 9½ lengths in the 11-horse field. International Star, trained by Michael Maker and owned by Ken and Sara Ramsey, earned 10 points in the Road to the Derby standings. International Star ($20.40) is tied with El Kabeir at the top of the standings with 21 points. The first of Oaklawn Park’s Derby points races, The Smarty Jones, will be held Monday in Hot Springs. … At Gulfstream Park in Hallandale, Fla., Sr. Quisqueyano ($43.20) won $250,000 Sunshine Millions Handicap as favorites Wildcat Red and Transparent failed to even hit the board. Ridden by Edgard Zayas, Sr. Quisqueyano held off East Hall and Catholic Cowboy. Transparent and Wildcat Red were fourth and fifth, respectively. Dame Dorothy ($6) — owned by celebrity chef Bobby Flay and ridden by Edgar Prado — won for the fifth time in six career starts, taking the $150,000 Sunshine Millions Distaff. Weekend Hideaway, a New York bred, won the $100,000 Sunshine Millions Sprint Stakes under Javier Castellano. Manchurian High ($8.20) won the $100,000 Sunshine Millions Turf Stakes under Luis Saez, finishing the 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.03 for owner and trainer Lilli Kurtinecz. … Willet ($6.30), ridden by Irad Ortiz, Jr., won the $100,000 Interborough Stakes for fillies and mares at Aqueduct.
