Cardinals rally in big way
Down 15 points after three quarters Tuesday, almost nothing appeared to be going Farmington's way. But the Cardinals turned up the defensive intensity in the final eight minutes and pulled off perhaps the comeback of the season, rallying from a 40-25 deficit for a 50-48 win at Clarksville in 5A-West Conference boys' action.
"If there was ever a game where we stole one, that was it," Farmington coach Beau Thompson said. "To be honest, we were outplayed in every aspect. We weren't hitting any shots and we didn't come out fired-up. But we picked up our defense in the fourth quarter and we stole one on the road and that's what you have to do in this league."
Farmington (11-5, 2-2 5A-West) stormed back to tie the game at 48-48, then forced a turnover with 1.6 seconds left. Skylar Barnes was then fouled and hit two free throws for the win.
"(Barnes) and Flint Oxford really changed the game for us," Thompson said. "Defensively, they changed everything with their traps and pressure."
The Cardinals now carry a two-game win streak into Friday's home matchup against Little Rock Christian (7-10, 1-3).

4A-1 Conference
Logjam at the top
The first half of the conference race is in the books and, to nobody's surprise, three teams are tied atop the girls' standings with one loss each.
Prairie Grove, Huntsville and Berryville all stand at 6-1 with the perfect triangle of wins and losses. Prairie Grove defeated Huntsville, Berryville defeated Prairie Grove, and Huntsville defeated Berryville.
Prairie Grove coach Kevin Froud said he knew coming in that the league race would be a slugfest.
"In junior high, this group of seniors were winning games," Froud said. "We knew the conference was going to be competitive."
Huntsville claimed a big 48-35 home win Tuesday over Berryville to force the three-way tie. The Lady Eagles seized control late.
"The score is not indicative of the game," Berry said. "We were tied 29-29 going into the fourth quarter, and we broke it open the last three minutes. They missed a few shots and we made a few shots, and they had to foul us late and we made free throws."
Huntsville got both Prairie Grove and Berryville at home in the first half of league play, but will travel in the second half, starting with Friday night's road trip to Prairie Grove.
"We've got a hard row to hoe in the second half," Berry said. "But we're looking forward to going to Prairie Grove, and we know they are looking forward to playing us."
Froud said while three teams currently share the lead, the conference is tough from top-to-bottom.
"Every night in this conference you've got to play," he said. "You better come prepared."

3A-1 West
Lady Pirates on a roll
Greenland appears to be cruising through the girls' 3A-1 West Conference.
The Lady Pirates (17-2) haven't lost in 2015 and mproved to 6-0 in the league, after Tuesday's 69-36 win over Cedarville. They have won six in a row and their only two losses have to Class 7A Springdale Har-Ber and 5A Farmington and ranked No. 1 in the state in 3A.
"We're in a good place right now," Greenland coach Alan Barton said. "We've finished the first round of conference, but we'll just take it one game at a time."
Kiana Thompson leads the team in scoring (15) and assists (8). The 5-foot-9 senior was named the state tournament Most Valuable Player on the Lady Pirates' state championship team in 2013. Kim Crown, a 6-foot junior, also averages 12 points per game.
But the Lady Pirates, who have a two-game lead on West Fork and Cedarville, also have great depth as Barton platoons, subbing five players at a time a great deal.
Cedarville travels to West Fork on Friday in a battle for sole possession of second place.
The boys' race in the 3A-1 West is again jumbled at the top, after Mansfield upended league leading West Fork 67-55 on Tuesday night.
West Fork, Mansfield, Lavaca and Greenland are now all tied for first at 4-2, while Haas Hall is a game back at 3-3. Greenland travels to Mansfield on Friday in a battle co-leaders, while West Fork hosts Cedarville. Lavaca steps out of conference play to face Paris.

2A-4 Conference
Decatur, Westside in control
The Decatur boys and the Johnson County Westside girls are in the conference drivers seat as the league starts the second half of the round-robin.
Westside (9-6, 5-2) is at Decatur tonight and a win by the Bulldogs (7-0, 14-6) would give them a three-game lead over the Rebels. Decatur's seniors are currently 30-5 in conference games over the past three seasons.
"It's a big game for Johnson County Westside to stay in the race and keep up with us," said Decatur coach John Unger. "It's a huge game for us because it could give us separation. A win would give us a three-game lead over them with six games left to play. Our guys are just going out and playing our game and at the end of the night we expect to win the game.
"We are not really worried about the playoff race. If we play like we are capable of playing, we feel like no one can beat us in our league."
Decatur defeated Magazine 38-33 in a game that saw two Bulldogs starters miss because of the flu. Second leading scorer Victor Urquidi missed the fourth quarter after suffering a back injury.
The Westside girls (8-0, 16-4) have a one-game lead over Hackett and are No. 4 in Class 2A by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

Hornets on rise
The Northwest Arkansas Hornets' roster was comprised of three seniors and a group of freshmen when it made a memorable run to a third-place finish at the National Christian Homeschool Championships tournament last year.
This season, the Hornets (18-10) are a year better and feature two seniors and the group of now-sophomores. The program has grown since last spring, leading to the Hornets being in a larger division this year. But they've been up for the test.
"The competition is a lot more challenging, but we've stepped up to it for the most part and had a pretty successful season," said coach Steve Schinnerer, who is in his second year with the organization.
The Hornets have high expectations for nationals this year, too. But before that, they'll get to host the NCHC's South Central regional tournament Feb. 26-28 in Springdale at the Next Level Achievements facility, an impressive get for a tournament that has been played in Oklahoma City in years past.
The regional will pit the Hornets against homeschool teams from Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas, Louisiana and northern Texas.
