Hopkins, Farmington too much for Little Rock Christian

FARMINGTON -- Little Rock Christian could not stop Farmington's Talon Hopkins on Friday, and the Lady Wildcats couldn't do much to contain her, either.

Hopkins dropped 25 points and dominated the boards as the Lady Cards controlled the game throughout in a 62-52 5A-West Conference win.

"She's a pretty good player," Farmington coach Brad Johnson said. "She's usually around 17 or 18 and has been over 20 a couple of times, but I think that is a season-high.

"She does so many things so well around the basket, and I think our girls did a good job of recognizing she was having a good night early and getting her the ball in places where she could score."

Hopkins did all of her work inside the lane, not attempting a 3-pointer.

Farmington (14-3, 4-1) stayed in contention in the early going in the 5A-West race. Jasmine Thomas led Little Rock Christian (7-11, 1-4) with 18 points.

The Lady Cards sputtered out of the gate and trailed 11-9 midway through the first quarter, but caught fire to run off a 8-0 spurt to take a 17-11 lead after the quarter.

Hopkins had 13 in the first half as Farmington led 31-23. Hopkins scored six in the third quarter and six more in the fourth and added 7-of-8 from the free-throw line in the second half.

Farmington never did blow the game open but controlled the lead. The closest Little Rock Christian got was 34-31 early in the third quarter, but Farmington pushed it back to double digits a few minutes later.

"It wasn't our best game and it wasn't a real pretty game, but it was a workman-like effort," Johnson said. "Give (Little Rock Christian) credit; they are a pretty good offensive team and we did a good job defensively on them. I think the key was we just got an early lead and then did a good job of just protecting it."

It was the second game in Farmington's new arena.

"The first night we came out pretty excited and shot a bunch of 3-pointers early in the game," Johnson said. "We were more comfortable tonight and came out and ran the offense and executed like we are supposed to."

Isaiah Harper knocked down a clutch 3-pointer with 7.0 seconds as Little Rock Christian held on to a win.

Harper had 28 points for the Warriors (8-10, 2-3), who led for most of the game but almost coughed up the win.

Farmington (11-6, 2-3) was down by double digits late in the third quarter but rallied to tie the game, and Matt Thomas hit a 3-pointer that gave the Cards a 55-52 lead. Thomas also made a free throw with 19.4 seconds left to push the Cards up 57-55, but Harper hit the 3 on the return trip. Farmington got off a shot at the buzzer but it didn't go down.

Thomas had 31 points for the Cardinals.
