Arkansas Insurance Department issues order on funeral home

Arkansas' insurance commissioner has issued an emergency order prohibiting a funeral home that has surrendered its operating license from the selling of prepaid funeral benefits contracts.

Insurance Commissioner Allen Kerr issued the order on Monday prohibiting Arkansas Funeral Care of Jacksonville from the selling the contracts. Kerr said funeral homes must have an active license with the Arkansas State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors to provide funeral services and merchandise in prepaid funeral benefits contracts.

Arkansas Funeral Care voluntarily surrendered its license on Friday. The action was taken after an inspector found bodies stacked in a cooler packed beyond capacity and other bodies that hadn't been embalmed lying out in the open.

Kerr says he has directed his staff to seize the funeral home's contracts and records for review.
