LITTLE ROCK — Arkansas education officials are scheduled to decide whether to assume control of the Little Rock School District after students at some of its schools performed poorly on state benchmark exams.
The Arkansas Board of Education will hold a special meeting Wednesday in Little Rock to discuss the proposed takeover and potentially take action.
The state last year classified an elementary school, two middle schools and three high schools as being in academic distress after fewer than half of the students scored at proficient levels on the tests.
A former school district board member said in a guest column to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that the district isn't working for children and called for a state takeover. A current board member said the body should have a chance to make improvements.
