Sheriff says death of hunter accident

MELBOURNE -- A shooting that killed a Poinsett County man during a hunting excursion near Melbourne on Saturday was accidental, Izard County Sheriff Tate Lawrence said Tuesday.

Ethan McFall, 20, of Tyronza was shot in the back with a 12-gauge shotgun at 10 a.m. Saturday on property along Jumbo Road west of Melbourne. Lawrence said in a news release that McFall and other family members were hunting on land they recently had acquired.

One family member, whom Lawrence did not name, tripped while carrying the weapon. The gun discharged, striking McFall in the back.

Deputies and members of the Melbourne Fire Department's first responders treated McFall. He was taken to the White River Health System in Batesville, where he later died.
