Business renewal deadline nearing

Businesses in North Little Rock are due to renew their annual business/privilege licenses with the city by Saturday, City Clerk/Treasurer Diane Whitbey said.

Renewals received after April 1 will have a 25 percent penalty added to their cost, based on their fee. Renewals that aren't made by July 1 will be assessed a 50 percent penalty.

For a list of business license categories, business owners can visit the city's website, nlr.ar.gov, and click on the Business tab.

More than 4,000 businesses are licensed in the city, according to the city clerk's office.

Arts scholarship contest draws 80

About 80 high school students from throughout the state participated in the Thea Foundation's annual Performing Arts Scholarship Competition on Jan. 17 at the nonprofit's headquarters in downtown North Little Rock.

Scholarships between $2,000-$4,000 are awarded to 10 winners, with five honorable mention selections.

Logan Kinkade of Russellville High School placed first, receiving a $4,000 scholarship. Mary Stovall of Conway High School was second for a $3,500 scholarship. Laura Leigh Turner of North Little Rock High School-West Campus placed third to receive a $3,000 scholarship. The remaining seven finishers each received $2,000 scholarships.

Participants competed in singing, acting and dancing before a panel of judges. This was the 11th year for the nonprofit to have a performing arts scholarship competition. Competitors are judged only on their talent without regard to grade point average or test scores and aren't required to major in the arts to be eligible.

More information on the Thea Foundation or any of its scholarship competitions is available at theafoundation.org.
