2 LR police officers injured during arrests

Two Little Rock police officers were injured on Thursday while arresting three men accused of breaking into a vehicle.

Carroll Flynn told officers he noticed a bag of change missing from his car after coming out of Walk-Winn Plastic on Scott Street in Little Rock about noon, according to a Little Rock Police Department report.

Flynn drove around to the front of Edward's Food Giant on Main Street where he saw Lewis Smith, 18, of Sherwood, Dominique Hickey, 21, and Cedric Richardson, 29, both of Little Rock, breaking into three different vehicles, the report stated.

Flynn told police when the men approached him, he held up a pistol and the men ran so he followed them, according to the report.

Sgt. Travis Cumming took Richardson into custody at Charles Bussey Avenue and Arch Street, according to the report.

Cumming put Richardson, who had not been placed in handcuffs, into the back of his patrol car, police said.

Cumming leaned into the car to speak to Richardson when the man shoved the police officer to the ground, the report stated.

Police said Cumming landed on his left hand and possibly broke or dislocated his left pinky, which he later received treatment for at Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock.

Another officer used a Taser on Richardson because he was violent and kept attempting to flee from police, which caused Richardson to hit his head on the street, according to the report.

Richardson was transported to the UAMS Medical Center for treatment, the report stated.

Smith and Hickey ran into a crawl space under a house at 2019 Center St., where officers arrested Hickey when exited the crawl space, police said.

Officer brought a police dog to go into the crawl space and find Smith, the report stated. Officer Austin Lynch was holding one of the crawl space doors shut when the dog was released, and was knocked over when the dog chased after a cat, according to the police report.

The dog bit Lynch several times in the left leg and on his right hand and he was transported to Baptist Medical Center for treatment, police said.

Officers found Smith running down the street and attempting to hide when they arrested him, according to the report.

Richardson, Smith and Hickey were charged with one count each of breaking and entering a vehicle and misdemeanor theft of property, police said.
