Improvements to I-30 topic of NLR meeting

The Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department will hold a public meeting today in North Little Rock to present and discuss transportation solutions as part of a study to improve Interstate 30 through downtown Little Rock and North Little Rock.

The meeting will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. in the gym of Friendly Chapel Church of the Nazarene at 116 S. Pine St. in North Little Rock.

The planning and environmental linkages study is identifying and documenting the transportation needs and potential improvements for the study area, which includes I-30 from Interstate 40 to Interstate 530, including the Arkansas River Bridge, as well as I-40 from John F. Kennedy Boulevard in North Little Rock to U.S. 67/167.

The project is part of the department's Connecting Arkansas Program, a $1.8 billion highway construction initiative that is financed in part by a 0.5 percent increase in the statewide sales tax. It was approved by voters in 2012 and will be in place for 10 years.

The meeting will present information on the evaluation of the preliminary alternatives presented at a Nov. 6 meeting. Preliminary alternatives include replacing the bridge as part of the project.

The meeting will be held in an open-house format, and the public is invited to visit anytime during the scheduled hours to view displays, ask questions and provide input on the study.
