Writers’ Colony names board

The Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow welcomed six new members and a new interim president to its Board of Directors at its recent board meeting at 515 Spring St. in Eureka Springs.

Eureka Springs resident Jill Slane is the new interim president of the board. She serves as managing director of Prescription Audio, the New Jersey-based music production company she founded in 2004. She currently oversees operations and business development, with spa, hotel and clinical clients worldwide. She also serves as a partner in Dreams Beyond Pictures, a London and Copenhagen-based film production company.

Newly elected board member and Eureka Springs resident Tommie Zwernemann is a retired senior economic development manager with the Guadalupe Blanco River Authority in south Texas. She has a degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio in geography and lives on a farm in an 1878 rock house that she restored.

Adjoa A. Aiyetoro is a Little Rock resident and a new board member. She joined the UALR William H. Bowen School of Law faculty in 2004. She is currently an associate professor of law and the director of the Racial Disparities in the Arkansas Criminal Justice System Research Project. She served as the inaugural director of UALR’s Institute on Race and Ethnicity from July 2011 to December 2012.

Charles Templeton of Eureka Springs, a new board member, is a retired school administrator from Texas. He served in the Marine Corps from 1967 until 1971, received his bachelor’s degree in history/psychology from Austin College in Sherman, Texas, and his master’s degree in public school administration from North Texas State University in Denton, Texas. He and his wife, Sandra, moved to Eureka Springs in 2007 and were instrumental in starting the Eureka Springs Independent newspaper with Mary Pat Boian.

Crow Johnson-Evans of Gravette was involved with the Writers’ Colony at its inception in 2000, and she rejoined the board after a brief absence. She was awarded the Spirit of Kerrville Award 1993, The World Folk Music Association Kate Wolf Memorial Award 1995 and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Northwest Arkansas Music Awards in 2002.

KJ Zumwalt is the chef and owner of KJ’s Caribe Restaurant and Cantina. She is an Arkansas native and got a bachelor’s of business administration in business marketing from Harding University.

Sharon Spurlin of Berryville has supported the Writers’ Colony beginning in 2005 and has served on numerous boards, including local boards of Clear Spring School and the Carroll County Community Foundation. She was named one of the 10 outstanding women of Carroll County in 2000.

Forty-six University of Arkansas at Fort Smith employees were honored at a bi-annual staff meeting Jan. 23 for their years of service at UAFS, with six staffers honored for working with the university for more than 30 years.

Cindy Boyd of Greenwood, administrative specialist with the College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics; Tammy Spencer of Howe, Okla., assistant to the director of Plant Operations; Penny Pendleton of Fort Smith, interim assistant to the provost; and Roger Young of Van Buren, Americans with Disabilities Act adviser, were recognized for 30 years of employment with UAFS, while Katy Brake of Greenwood, institutional assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs; and Coletta Furner of Lavaca, facilities coordinator to the provost, were honored for 40 years of service.
