Earnings report

Companies reporting quarterly earnings Thursday included:

Abbott Laboratories, the largest maker of heart stents and adult nutritional beverages, a profit of $905 million, or 59 cents a share, up from $589 million, or 37 cents, a year ago. Revenue rose 5.6 percent to $5.36 billion. Shares rose $1.85 to close at $45.26.

Time Warner Cable Inc., the company awaiting regulatory approval to merge with Comcast Corp., a profit of $554 million, or $1.95 a share, up from $540 million, or $1.89, a year ago. Revenue rose 3.8 percent to $5.79 billion. Shares fell $1.33 to close at $137.77.

Valero Energy Corp., the oil refiner, a profit of $1.16 billion, or $2.22 a share, down from $1.29 billion, or $2.38 a share, a year ago. Revenue was $27.86 billion. Shares rose 57 cents to close at $52.08.

Viacom Inc., owner of the MTV and Comedy Central cable TV channels, a profit of $500 million, or $1.20 a share, down from $547 million, or $1.20 a share, a year ago. Revenue rose 4.6 percent to $3.34 billion. Shares rose $1.04 to close at $67.54.
