LR Zoo announces births of maned wolf pups

LITTLE ROCK — The Little Rock Zoo announced that two maned wolf pups were born at the zoo recently and are faring well.

The pups were born to maned wolves Gabby and Diego on Dec. 21. The Little Rock Zoo said their breeding was recommended by the Association of Zoos and Aquarium's Species Survival Plan.

Maned wolves are threatened in their native habitats in South America because of deforestation.

The animals are known for their long legs and reddish-brown coats, but newborns have darker coats.

Visitors can catch brief glimpses of the pups now, but they won't be on full exhibit until later in the spring.
