Bentonville Schools chief to collect SnackPacks food

BENTONVILLE -- School District Superintendent Michael Poore has lofty expectations for a food drive he's leading.

Poore will collect donations to support the Samaritan Community Center's SnackPacks for Kids program in his office at 500 Tiger Blvd. starting Monday. If enough donations are received by Feb. 13 to fill his office, he'll spend the following Monday working from the district Administration Building's roof.

This is the third time Poore has done this kind of food drive. He spent a day working from the roof in December 2012 after about $4,000 worth of donations filled his office.

"Our community is blessed with so many resources that it's easy to think we don't have hungry kids in Bentonville, but we do," Poore said in a news release .

SnackPacks for Kids provides healthy snacks to children at high risk of food insecurity during weekends. More than 6,500 SnackPacks are distributed weekly to 95 elementary schools and Head Start programs in Northwest Arkansas. Since August, 15,205 SnackPacks have been distributed to 926 students in Bentonville schools, according to the district.

Donations needed for SnackPacks include pudding cups, fruit cups, juice boxes, fruit chews and microwavable meals such as macaroni and cheese and soup. Individually wrapped, single-serving packages of graham crackers, cheese and crackers, and peanut-free snacks also are needed.

Donations may be dropped off at any Bentonville school or the Administration Building.
