New district's board seats draw 3 filers

Three people signed up on the first day of the filing period Tuesday as candidates for election Sept. 15 to the new Jacksonville/North Pulaski School Board.

Those elected to the board will help shepherd the new district -- currently a part of the Pulaski County Special School District -- into independent operation starting in July 2016.

The candidates are Daniel Gray, currently president of the interim board for the new school district and seeking an at-large board position; LaConda Watson, also a member of the interim board and seeking the board's Zone 4 position; and Dena Toney, who is running for the Zone 5 seat.

All seven positions on the Jacksonville/North Pulaski board are open for election, as are three seats in the North Little Rock School District.

There will be no school board elections this year in the Little Rock and Pulaski County Special districts in Pulaski County.

The state dismissed the locally elected boards when it took control of the two districts, one for fiscal distress and the other for academic distress.

The candidate filing deadline is at noon Tuesday in the Pulaski County clerk's office.
