U.S. 71 reopens after floodwaters recede

A section of U.S. 71 near the Red River in Little River County that had closed because of high water is back open, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said Wednesday.

The agency said in a statement that a nearly 2 1/2-mile stretch of the highway north of the river reopened to traffic at 7:45 a.m. after being closed Friday.

That was the second closure because of floodwaters for the route in less than a month. It was also shut May 29 to June 14.

The statement said the highway was reopened after crews inspected and cleaned the stretch between the Arkansas Welcome Center at the southern end and the intersection with Arkansas 380 at the northern end.
