Spoon signs with Boston

Former Arkansas outfielder Tyler Spoon became the second Razorback in two days to come to terms with the Boston Red Sox.

The Van Buren native signed Wednesday with Boston, which selected him in the 35th round of the major league draft last month. Spoon joined teammate Andrew Benintendi, who signed an agreement that included a $3.59 million signing bonus with the Red Sox on Tuesday. Terms of Spoon's deal were not available.

Spoon ranked second among Arkansas regulars with a .327 batting average last year and led the team with 20 doubles. The junior also had six home runs and 54 RBI, all career highs along with his batting average, and was successful on 10 of 12 stolen base attempts.

Spoon went 5 for 12 in the NCAA Stillwater Regional, with 1 home run and 4 RBI, then hit .333 (4 for 12) with 4 RBI in the Razorbacks' super regional series victory over Missouri State. He was 2 for 9 in 2 games at the College World Series.

Spoon graduated in May with a degree in recreation and sports management.
