Travs score early, take down 'Hounds

The Arkansas Travelers scored four runs in the first three innings and came away with a 5-3 victory over the Midland Rockhounds on Saturday in front of an announced crowd of 7,028 at Security Bank Ballpark in Midland, Texas.

Second baseman Sherman Johnson walked to start the game and stole second base. He later scored on a double by Brian Hernandez to give the Travs a 1-0 lead. Hernandez scored on a Raywilly Gomez single for a 2-0 lead.

Johnson got things going in the third inning as well, starting the inning with a single to right-center field. He advanced to second on a Drew Maggi bunt single and moved to third on a Jared Mitchell walk. Johnson and Maggi scored on a ground-rule double by Blake Gailen to right field that gave the Travs a 4-1 lead.

Maggi singled to start the fifth inning and stole second base. After a strikeout and groundout, Maggi scored on a Gomez single to left for a 5-2 lead.

Travs starter Christopher Ellis (3-0) got the victory after allowing 3 earned runs on 8 hits with 2 walks and 7 strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings. Eduard Santos relieved in the sixth, pitching 2 1/3 effective innings and Greg Mahle got his fourth save of the season after allowing 1 hit with 1 walk and 1 strikeout in the ninth inning.
