Boy, 13, drowns in closed Memphis pool

MEMPHIS — Authorities say a 13-year-old boy has drowned after climbing the fence of a closed Memphis public pool and going for a swim.

The Commercial Appeal reported that the incident happened Sunday afternoon at the L.E. Brown community pool, just south of downtown, after four boys climbed the fence.

Memphis Police Maj. Tony Rudolph said three of the boys ran to a fire station to get help after the other boy jumped into the water and did not re-emerge.

Memphis firefighters were unable to resuscitate the boy, who was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

According to the newspaper, the drowning is believed to be the first time a child has drowned in a Memphis public pool since two drownings occurred in May 2008.
