Hutchinson appoints career education board members

Gov. Asa Hutchinson on Monday announced members appointed to the new Career Education and Workforce Development Board.

Act 892, passed by the Arkansas Legislature during the general session earlier this year, created the council to replace the state Board of Career Education at the Department of Career Education, the governor's office said in a news release.

Thirteen members will serve on the board from various industries, and will also include non-voting members from state agencies, the release states. The board will create a "comprehensive statewide program for career education and workforce development" as well as oversee the Office of Skills Development, state officials said.

Members of the board comprise Dan Serrano of Lowell; Jeff Standridge of Conway; Keith Vire of Fayetteville; Burton Weis of Fort Smith; Gina Radke of Sherwood; Adam Arroyos of Fayetteville; Steven Collier of Augusta; Michael Garner of Hensley; Stacy Gunderman of Batesville; Troy Keeping of Marion; Jenifer Price of Springdale; Hugh McDonald of Little Rock; and Scott Copas of Little Rock.

Ex officio members include Education Commissioner Johnny Key; Department of Higher Education Director Brett Powell; Arkansas Community Colleges Executive Director Bill Stovall; Arkansas Economic Development Commission Mike Preston; Department of Workforce Services Director Daryl Bassett; Paul Beran with the Arkansas Association of Public Universities; and Arkansas Association of Educational Administrators Executive Director Richard Abernathy.
