2 Hogs make Outland list

Arkansas offensive linemen Denver Kirkland and Sebastian Tretola were included Friday on the 81-man watch list for the Outland Trophy, which is given annually to the nation’s top interior lineman.

Kirkland, a junior, made the move from right guard to left tackle in the spring, where he will play next to Tretola, a senior left guard. Kirkland, who has started 21 of 25 career games, graded at 79 percent last season while allowing one sack and committing three penalties.

Tretola, a transfer from Iowa Western Community College, did not allow a sack in more than 690 snaps last season.

They helped Arkansas become the only team in the country with two 1,000-yard rushers: Jonathan Williams (1,190) and Alex Collins (1,100).

The winner of the Outland Trophy, named for former All-America lineman John Outland of Penn, will be announced during the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on Dec. 10.

PA goes 6-0 at Virginia tournament

Defending Class 5A state champion Pulaski Academy went 6-0 in pool play of the 7-on-7 University tournament Friday in Vienna, Va., outside Washington, D.C.

The Bruins beat North Point, Md., 29-6, Washington (D.C.) Dunbar 41-0, Dublin, Ohio, 41-0, Oakton, Md., 33-12, Paint Branch, Md., 23-21 and Zanesville, Ohio, 24-14.

Pulaski Academy will be the No. 1 seed in today’s elimination round, which begins at 8 a.m. Central.

VOLLEYBALL

Begic signs with Italian team

Former UALR standout Edina Begic has signed a professional contract with Volley Soverato, a team in Soverato, Italy, the school announced Friday.

Begic led UALR to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season to cap a career in which she was named Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Year three times and was named an honorable mention All-American by the American Volleyball Coaches Association in 2013 and 2014.

Volley Soverato is in the Series A2 league, the second-highest division in Italian volleyball. Its season begins in September.

Hagen named Arkansas State coach

Mike Hagen was named Arkansas State’s new men’s coach, Athletic Director Terry Mohajir announced Friday. Hagen spent the past 10 seasons at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa, where he served as golf coach and athletic director. Hagen led the Warriors to four NJCAA national championships, including titles in 2014 and 2015. Hagen replaces Steve Johnson, who resigned in June to become general manager of Monticello Country Club.

Arkansas Tech duo 42nd in Championship

Arkansas Tech’s team of Evan Smith and Aaron Sarna is 42nd after two rounds of the College Bass Championship at Stevens Point, Wis. The duo did not catch any fish through two rounds Leading the competition is Tyler Rivet and Allyson Marcel of Nicholls State with 15 pounds. In second place is Josh Benzena and Matthew McArdle of Texas A&M.
