Intruder shot after breaking into Faulkner County home, police say

An intruder who broke out a window to get into a Faulkner County home last week is recovering after being shot by a man inside, authorities said.

The suspected intruder was identified as 36-year-old Jonathan Hill after he sought treatment for a gunshot wound at a Clinton hospital, the Faulkner County sheriff's office said. He was later taken to a Conway hospital, where he was still in treatment Monday but expected to survive, said Chief Deputy Matt Rice.

The break-in happened about 5:30 a.m. Friday at a home on Poole Lane in Damascus, Rice said.

The 42-year-old homeowner told police she was sleeping when someone broke out a bedroom window and entered the home. The assailant reportedly then shoved her on the bed and picked up a shotgun that was in the corner of the room.

Rice said the intruder went to the living room and put a knife to the throat of a 70-year-old man who was sleeping on the couch, before returning back to the bedroom.

"While the suspect was in the bedroom, [the man who had been on the couch] grabbed his small handgun, went to the bedroom and fired one round at the suspect," the sheriff's office said in a statement. "The suspect then jumped back out of the window and fled on foot."

A second suspect — described as a white woman — was also in the home and struck the 70-year-old man in the back after he opened fire, police said. She also then fled.

Police found the intruder's knife and cellphone left at the scene, the statement said, and learned a short time later that a man with a gunshot wound had sought treatment at the Clinton emergency room.

Hill was found there and a woman with him was taken in for questioning but not charged, Rice said, noting that the case remains under investigation.

He said the motive wasn't known and it also wasn't clear why the home was targeted.
