Ninth-inning single rallies Drillers

DRILLERS 5, TRAVELERS 4

Lars Anderson's single in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Tulsa Drillers a 5-4 victory over the Arkansas Travelers on Wednesday night in front of an announced crowd of 4,175 at ONEOK Field in Tulsa.

The game was tied at 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth when the Drillers rallied to win the series opener.

Ronald Torreyes led off the ninth with a single to left field before Peter Lavin sacrificed Torreyes to second base. Brian Burgamy was intentionally walked to put runners on first and second with one out. Greg Mahle replaced Kyle Winkler for Arkansas, but he gave up a single to Anderson and Torreyes scored from second to win it for the Drillers.

Jorge DeLeon (1-3) earned the victory for Tulsa, allowing 1 hit and striking out 2 in 1 1/3 innings of relief.

Winkler (0-1) took the loss for the Travs after being charged with 1 run on 1 hit in 1 1/3 innings of relief.

Brian Hernandez hit his fifth home run of the season for Arkansas, which was outhit by Tulsa 10-6. Hernandez finished 1 for 3 and no Trav had more than one hit Wednesday.

Tulsa tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second and took a 2-1 lead in the third inning on Lavin's RBI single.

In the top of the fifth, Arkansas' Sherman Johnson's bases-loaded walk allowed Michael Snyder to score, tying the game at 2-2. Tulsa took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth on Anderson's RBI single and Kyle Farmer's run-scoring double.

The Travs cut the lead to 4-3 in the top of the sixth on Blake Gailen's fifth home run of the season and tied the game at 4-4 in the eighth when Drew Maggi scored on a throwing error by Torreyes at shortstop.

Both starting pitchers earned no-decisions.

Arkansas' Chris Ellis allowed 4 runs on 8 hits in 5 innings. He struck out five and walked one. Tulsa's Ross Stripling pitched 5 innings, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits while striking out 7 and walking 2.

CARDINALS 6, NATURALS 3

Northwest Arkansas blew a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning and Springfield used a six-run outburst to top the Naturals in front of an announced crowd of 3,868 at Hammons Field in Springfield, Mo.

Patrick Wisdom's RBI double and Bruce Caldwell's run-scoring single pulled the Cardinals within 3-2 before Aledmys Diaz hit a grand slam off Sam Selman to give Springfield the lead.

Kansas City Royals pitcher Kris Medlen made his third rehabilitation start with the Naturals and kept the Cardinals at bay, allowing 3 hits and striking out 4 in 7 innings. He walked two in 94 pitches.

Lane Adams and Alex Liddi each had home runs for Northwest Arkansas.
