Third suspect arrested in security guard’s killing

U.S. marshals and Little Rock police have arrested a third suspect in the slaying of a 68-year-old security guard in his home July 8, police said Friday night.

Calvin Thornton Jr., 27, of 2100 S. Valentine St. was arrested Friday at 1600 S. Pierce St. on a capital-murder charge in the death of Fred Pohnka Jr., Little Rock police spokesman Lt. Steven McClanahan said via email.

McClanahan said Thornton would be booked into the Pulaski County jail. The jail’s website didn’t yet list him as an inmate.

Thornton was the third suspect identified in the case. Malcolm Jamel Cooksey, 24, and Alexandria Levette Martin, 27, have also been arrested in connection with the killing.

Pohnka, a security guard at Region's Bank, was found beaten to death with a blunt object in his home at 1217 S. Jackson St. His wallet, cellphone, TV and gun were stolen, according to a police report.
