Two killed in collision involving tractor-trailer, car

BENTONVILLE -- Two people were killed Thursday night in a two-vehicle collision on Arkansas 72, according to an Arkansas State Police report.

Joe Maldonado, 39, of Springdale and Crystal Johnson, 34, of Gravette were killed in the collision at Big Springs Road, four miles west of Gravette.

State Police was notified at 10:18 p.m. of a collision involving a tractor-trailer and a passenger car, according to the report.

Maldonado was driving east in a 2014 Mack tractor-trailer. Johnson was in a 2002 Honda Accord that was in front of the tractor-trailer traveling in the same direction, according to the report. The tractor-trailer struck Johnson's vehicle from behind and caused it to go off the highway and overturn, according to the report.

Johnson was ejected from the vehicle, according to the report.

The tractor-trailer traveled off the highway and jack-knifed and then struck some trees, according to the report.

No other vehicles were involved in the collision.

The crash remains under investigation, and the details are based on preliminary information, the report stated.
