Spurs win it with female calling shots

San Antonio Coach Becky Hammon celebrates after the Spurs won the NBA summer league title.

The first female head coach in the NBA summer league won the league's championship in her first season.

Becky Hammon coached the San Antonio Spurs to a 93-90 victory over the Phoenix Suns in the title game on Monday night in Las Vegas.

Hammon, a former WNBA All-Star, completed her first season as an assistant for the Spurs earlier this year. She lost her first summer league game to the New York Knicks, but the Spurs won six consecutive to win the title.

"It was a grind," Hammon told reporters Monday. "They've been together for 17 days. They really started to jell the last two or three games. They listened and they played really hard for me. I just really appreciate their attentiveness and alertness. They were tired but they fought through."

Jonathon Simmons scored 23 points and took home MVP honors for the championship game. Treveon Graham added 22 points for the Spurs.

"It was a humbling experience," Simmons told NBATV of playing for Hammon. "For all of us. I really love her and I've only known her a couple days. She's a real cool coach. She's a player coach. That's something we all like."

Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich, who has won five NBA titles, hired Hammon last year because of her coaching acumen.

"I don't know if her perspective is unique," Popovich said. "It's women instead of men, but it's the same game. Becky knows what to do on a pick-and-roll just as much as what Tony Parker knows. So I don't think it's unique at all."

Major night

The Milwaukee Brewers had a "Major League Night" on Tuesday night, promoting the 1989 motion picture that featured Brewers play-by-play broadcaster Bob Uecker.

Uecker was the Cleveland Indians' play-by-play man in Major League, which also starred Tom Berenger, Wesley Snipes and Corbin Bernsen.

CBSSports.com writer Matt Snyder paid tribute to Major League by ranking his top 10 lines from Uecker's character Harry Doyle. Here are some of the highlights:

No. 8: "A lot of new faces in Chief Wahoo's tribe this year, as they take on the defending American League champs, the New York Yankees. And hopefully we'll have some names that go with those faces before the first at-bat."

No. 7: "In case you haven't noticed, and judging by the attendance you haven't, the Indians have managed to win a few here and there, and are threatening to climb out of the cellar."

No. 1: "Juuuuust a bit outside, he tried the corner and missed."

NBA Hoosiers

The Hickory Huskers are coming to the NBA next season.

The Indiana Pacers will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the 1986 motion picture Hoosiers by wearing the maroon and gold uniforms that Jimmy Chitwood and the Huskers made famous in the beloved film.

The Pacers said Tuesday that the Hickory uniforms will be worn in select 2015-2016 games through a partnership with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, the company that released Hoosiers.

The film, inspired by the team from tiny Milan that won the 1954 Indiana high school championship when all the schools played in one classification, was nominated for two Academy Awards and is regarded as one of sports' best films.

Pacers President Larry Bird said the team is honored to wear the uniforms "because of the attention it will bring to the storied history of Indiana basketball and the success of that movie."
