Henderson qualifies for Pan Am Games final

Jeff Henderson, a North Little Rock native and Sylvan Hills graduate, jumped 26 feet, 10 inches during qualifying Tuesday in the long jump at the Pan Am Games in Toronto and has qualified for today's final.

Henderson had the best qualifying mark Tuesday and is one of two Americans that will compete in the final. His teammate Marquise Goodwin, who plays for the NFL's Buffalo Bills, leaped 26 feet, 4.9 inches.

The long jump final is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. Central at York University in Toronto. Henderson, the 2014 U.S. long jump champion, has already qualified for the IAAF World Championships next month in Beijing.

Two top seeds advance at Junior Match Play

The top seeds in the boys and girls brackets had little trouble in their matches Tuesday at the ASGA Junior Match Play Championship, played at Eagle Hill Golf and Athletic Club in Little Rock, while the No. 2 boys seed fell in the round of 32.

Boys top seed Fisher Vollendorf of Fayetteville easily advanced to today's quarterfinal round, defeating Hunter Hull of Conway 8 and 6 in the round of 64 and Connor Gaunt of Cabot 7 and 6 in the round of 32. Girls top seed Elizabeth Moon of Forrest City also advanced to the quarterfinals, defeating Lauren Loeb of Maumelle 3 and 2.

Carter Cloe of Conway, the No. 2 overall boys seed and top-seeded player in the lower half of the bracket, defeated Conway's Davis Zimmerman 3 and 1 in his first match, but lost to El Dorado's Gage Parker 2-up in the round of 32.

August Reynolds of Harrison, Grayson Martin of White Hall and Nathan Jolly of Sherwood all took 19 holes to win their first-round matches, while it took 20 holes for Mark White of Gentry to defeat Palmer Hays of Fayetteville.

Quarterfinal matches will be played today and the tournament runs through Friday.

BASEBALL

Pine Bluff Braves rout Union Chapel

Deonte Howard scored three runs and stole three bases to help the Pine Bluff Braves beat the Union Chapel Travelers 18-8 in six innings Sunday in Union Chapel.

The Braves scored four runs in the first, two in the second and third, four and the fourth and fifth and two more in the sixth as they finished with 13 hits.

Will Harris hit a two-run home run and drove in four runs. James Mitchell, Chase Smith and Earl White each had two RBI.

Mitchell (2-0) was the winning pitcher, pitching two innings of relief of starter Ty Houser.

DeQuarius Campbell, who took the loss for Union Chapel, scored two runs and stole two bases.

The Braves (8-4-1) will play the Pine Bluff Twins on Sunday in Pine Bluff.

BASKETBALL

UALR men adds transfer

Thomas Brandsma, a 6-5 forward, has transferred to UALR from Angelo State, Coach Chris Beard announced Tuesday.

Brandsma, who will sit out the 2015-2016 season because of NCAA transfer rules, has played his entire college career for Beard. He played his freshman season under Bear at McMurry University in 2012-2013, appearing in 28 games, before transferring to Angelo State when Beard was hired by the Rams. Brandsma averaged 3.1 points and 2.6 rebounds per game for the Rams last season.

TENNIS

ASU names women's coach

Kel Lange, who spent the past four seasons as the head coach at Birmingham Southern College, was named the head women's coach at Arkansas State on Tuesday.

Lange led the Panthers to an 11-3 record this past season and played in the Southern Athletic Association championship match. He also has coaching experience at Mississippi State, Texas A&M and Kentucky.

Lange has worked with professional tennis players Luke and Murphy Jensen, who won the 1993 French Open doubles title, and spent time as the tennis director at the Little Rock and Nashville (Tenn.) Racquet Clubs.
