Sharknado inspiring Mariners?

Robinson Cano and the Seattle Mariners are 44-52 and are 10 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Angels in the American League West. According to freelance writer Kenny Ducey, Wednesday’s release of "Sharknado 3" could provide inspiration because the Mariners are 19-4 in the first two weeks following the release of "Sharknado" and "Sharknado 2."

Baseball is a game full of streaks, trends and superstitions, but even the most ardent baseball fan might find this trend a little hard to swallow.

Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No! premiered Wednesday night on SyFy, which could lead to success over the next two weeks for the Seattle Mariners, according to freelance writer Kenny Ducey.

Ducey wrote a piece for HashtagImportant.com, in which he found that the Mariners have an MLB-best 19-4 record in each of the two-week periods following the releases of Sharknado and Sharknado 2: The Second One. The Kansas City Royals hold the second-best record over the same period at 16-7.

He also noted that teams with an aquatic reference in their name (Mariners, Marlins, Rays and Pirates) have a 56-34 record in that two-week stretch, while the rest of the league is 283-305.

The release of Sharknado 3 may spell bad news for the Toronto Blue Jays, who hold a 7-17 combined record after the first two movies in the series aired.

While the movie's release may spell short-term success for the Mariners, their luck has run out in each of the other two occasions as the team failed to make the playoffs both years.

The Sharknado series has a direct tie to the sports world, as several sports stars were cast in the latest film, including Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban playing the president of the United States. Several scenes of Sharknado 2 were filmed inside Citi Field, home of the New York Mets.

According to informal polls from Fox Sports and ESPN taken this week at Big 12 football media days, both players and coaches have spoken out in favor of the league adding more teams.

While there may be plenty of teams outside of the major conferences who would accept an invitation to the Big 12, Kansas State Coach Bill Snyder suggested reaching out to a former member.

"Let's bring Nebraska back and a few others, one other maybe," Snyder told David Ubben of Fox Sports. "I know the programs I've seen mentioned, all good programs, all good universities."

When ESPN surveyed the players attending the meetings, 88 percent of them were in favor of expansion, with Texas A&M (22 percent) listed as the most popular target. Brigham Young, Houston and Nebraska were the only other schools to join Texas A&M with more than one vote from the players.

Card cameo

St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright suffered a season-ending Achilles tendon injury in April and has been rehabbing after successful surgery.

He took a break Monday night to attend his daughter's 8-and-under softball game. When the pitching machine broke during the game, Wainwright took to the mound to help out.

Pictures surfaced on Twitter showing Wainwright on the mound, and Wainwright himself posted a tweet saying, "I told everyone I'd play again this year!"

"Someone, somewhere is upset Wainwright was at his daughter's game and not focusing on his rehab. Don't be that person," CBSSports.com baseball writer Mike Axisa wrote.
