Marlins deal Cishek

CARDINALS

MIAMI -- In what may be the first in a flurry of moves before the upcoming trading deadline, the Marlins dealt former closer Steve Cishek to St. Louis on Friday.

The Marlins received minor league closer Kyle Barraclough, who will report to Class AA Jacksonville.

The trade of Cishek was expected as the lanky right-hander had lost his job as closer in May after blowing four of seven save opportunities. He has pitched better since returning from a stint in the minors and was drawing interest from a number of teams in playoff contention seeking to add bullpen depth.

With a $6.65 million salary this season, he was too expensive to retain outside of the closer role into 2016, when he becomes eligible for salary arbitration. The Cardinals will pick up the remainder of his salary.

The Marlins recalled right-hander Andre Rienzo from Triple-A New Orleans to take Cishek's place on the roster.

ROYALS

Cuthbert recalled

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Royals have recalled infielder Cheslor Cuthbert from Class AAA Omaha and sent down infielder Dusty Coleman.

The AL Central leaders made the move before Friday night's game against Houston.

Cuthbert, 22, played four games with the Royals earlier this month, hitting .333 with two RBI in his first major league stint. He also played in the All-Star Futures Game this month.

Cuthbert hit .272 with 8 home runs and 38 RBI at Omaha.

Coleman went 0 for 5 in 4 games for Kansas City, striking out 3 times.

TIGERS

Cabrera on road

BOSTON -- Watching games on TV has been so difficult for injured Miguel Cabrera that the 10-time All-Star decided to join the Detroit Tigers on their 10-game road trip.

The first baseman took some light swings in batting practice Friday at Fenway Park in the next step in his recovery from a strained left calf.

Cabrera declined to speculate when he'll return. The team initially indicated he'll be out until mid-August.

Speaking about the July 3 injury for the first time, Cabrera said he felt like "somebody shot me from behind" as he ran to second base in a victory over Toronto.

Cabrera still leads the majors with a .350 batting average.

ASTROS

Make room for Kazmir

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Houston Astros have cleared roster space for newly acquired pitcher Scott Kazmir by optioning outfielder L.J. Hoes to Class AAA Fresno.

Kazmir was scheduled to start Friday night at Kansas City. The Astros got the left-hander Thursday in a trade with Oakland.

Hoes started four games for Houston after being promoted from the minors on July 12. He's hit .267 in eight games in two stints this season with Houston.

The Astros also said outfielder Alex Presley cleared waivers and was outrighted to Fresno. Presley, who played with Pittsburgh and Minnesota before joining the Astros last year, has three days to accept the assignment or opt for free agency.

ROCKIES

Dickerson back from DL

DENVER -- The Colorado Rockies have activated outfielder Corey Dickerson from the 15-day disabled list and optioned left-hander Rex Brothers to Class AAA Albuquerque.

Dickerson was scheduled to play left and bat sixth against the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night.

Dickerson went on the 15-day on May 19 with plantar fasciitis in his left foot and returned June 11. He returned to the DL on June 17 with the same injury after playing five games.

He is batting .299 with 5 home runs in 55 games.

Brothers had a 6.75 ERA in three appearances since his recall July 10. He has struggled since, going 2-1 with 19 saves and a 1.74 ERA in 72 games for Colorado in 2013.

The Rockies have 39 players on their 40-man roster.

INDIANS

GM: No trades

CLEVELAND -- Indians General Manager Chris Antonetti says he has "no motivation" to trade any young starting pitchers.

With a week left before the trading deadline, Antonetti said Friday the club has received numerous calls from teams interested in Cleveland's starters.

The Indians have one of baseball's best young staffs and Corey Kluber, Carlos Carrasco, Trevor Bauer, Danny Salazar and Cody Anderson are under the team's control for several years.

Cleveland remains in the AL wild-card race despite an inconsistent offense, and Antonetti remains confident the club's current lineup can get hot and string together some victories.

As far as making a deal, Antonetti said the Indians are "open to a lot of different things," but the club is not interested in adding players just for the balance of this season.

METS

Conforto promoted

NEW YORK -- The New York Mets have promoted top hitting prospect Michael Conforto from the minors and put outfielder Michael Cuddyer on the 15-day disabled list.

The weak-hitting Mets made the moves before Friday night's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Cuddyer hasn't played since Tuesday because of inflammation in his left knee. The move was made retroactive to Wednesday.

Cuddyer, 36, is hitting .250 with 8 home runs and 30 RBI in 82 games. He won the 2013 NL batting title with Colorado, then signed a two-year, $21 million deal with the Mets last November.

The Mets selected Conforto's contract from Class AA Binghamton. He was the 10th overall pick in the 2014 draft from Oregon State.

Conforto, 22, was batting .312 with 5 home runs and 26 RBI in 45 games at Binghamton after starting the year at high-A St. Lucie.

Conforto started in the All-Star Futures Game this month. He went 2 for 2 and threw a runner out at the plate.
