Six months on job, auditor's aide quits

Chief Deputy Auditor George Franks has resigned and plans to return to Texas after six months in the job, state Auditor Andrea Lea said Friday.

"It wasn't a good fit for either of us," said Lea, a Republican from Russellville who was sworn in as state auditor on Jan. 13.

"He lives in Texas. His wife lives in Texas. She wasn't able to get a job here. His kids and grandkids, everyone is back there," said Lea, a former state representative.

Before Lea hired him, Franks was an associate professor of government focusing on criminal justice and public administration at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches.

Franks' last day at work in the auditor's office was Thursday, Lea said. His salary was $113,158 per year.

Franks wrote in an email dated Thursday to the auditor's staff regarding his "departure/resignation" that Lea "is truly blessed in having such an outstanding collection of individuals working for her. I wish each of you Godspeed in your endeavors, and the very best fortune in all you do in the future."

Franks could not be reached for comment Friday by telephone.

Lea said she hasn't decided upon a replacement for Franks and that she's researching whether she has to fill the chief deputy post.

The state auditor's salary is $85,000 per year. Under Amendment 94 to the Arkansas, a citizens commission boosted the salaries of state officials, including the state auditor.

The office is responsible for writing the checks to pay state bills, taking care of payroll for thousands of state employees and conducting the Great Arkansas Treasure Hunt.
