News and notes

• Former Arkansas Razorbacks pitcher Ryne Stanek was placed on the disabled list by the Montgomery Biscuits (AA Rays) on Thursday. Stanek, who is 8-5 this season with a 3.09 ERA in 17 starts, last pitched in a 4-1 loss to the Pensacola (Fla.) Blue Wahoos (AA Reds) on July 12. "From what I've been told, Stanek is just a little fatigued," Barons radio broadcaster Aaron Vargas said. "[His] velocity has been down slightly, so they're going to give him a few weeks of rest." Vargas added Stanek was placed on the disabled list to allow for another pitcher to take his place in the rotation.

• Former Arkansas State pitcher Charles Owen, who was drafted in the 19th round of the MLB draft by the San Francisco Giants last month, was promoted Tuesday to the short-season Class A Salem-Keizer Volcanoes from the Giants' Arizona League rookie team. Owen went 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA in 5 games for the Arizona League team. He lost his debut for the Volcanoes on Tuesday, allowing 3 earned runs on 6 hits with 1 strikeout in 1 1/3 innings of a 15-8 loss to the Tri-City Dust Devils (short-A Padres).

• Former Arkansas Razorbacks pitcher Nolan Sanburn was placed on the disabled list by the Birmingham Barons (AA White Sox) on July 16. Sanburn, who is 0-2 this season with a 6.26 ERA in 17 appearances for the Barons, was placed on the disabled list on June 2 with shoulder tightness and had been activated on July 8. He made 2 appearances, on July 10 at the Jacksonville Suns (AA Marlins) and against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (AA Reds) on July 15, before going on the disabled list again. He allowed 4 earned runs and had 4 walks in 1 combined inning of work.

• Pitcher Andy Ferguson (Arkansas State/Benton) was placed on the disabled list by the Omaha (Neb.) Storm Chasers (AAA Royals) on Tuesday, retroactive to July 20. Ferguson won his last start at the Nashville (Tenn.) Sounds (AAA Athletics) on July 19, allowing 4 hits with 6 strikeouts in 5 innings to improve to 7-2 on the season with a 2.51 ERA.
