RV park sinkhole remains a mystery

Workers from various North Little Rock city departments continue to search for the source of a sinkhole that appeared recently at the city-operated Downtown Riverside RV Park, officials said Friday.

The sinkhole has been stabilized and isn't in an area that affects RV camping, but it does block access from within the RV park to a gate leading to the Clinton Presidential Park Bridge, said Bob Major, executive director of the North Little Rock Advertising and Promotion Commission, which oversees the RV park.

The bridge remains accessible from outside of the fenced RV park, Major said. The bridge crosses the Arkansas River to the Clinton Presidential Center in Little Rock.

"Right now it is not affecting our operation" of the RV park, Major said. "Everything seems to be stable."

Workers from the city's Engineering, Wastewater and Electric departments have been involved in work to repair and locate the source of the sinkhole, Major said. Electricity to the park was shut off part of last week to install temporary electrical service because of digging near the current power supply location, he said.

Danny Bradley, the mayor's chief of staff, said Friday that workers still are attempting to discover the cause of the sinkhole, adding that one suspected source has been ruled out.

Grant to help fund fire-safety efforts

The North Little Rock Fire Department accepted a $2,800 grant Thursday from the Arkansas Fire Prevention Commission to further department programs, Fire Marshal John Pflasterer announced.

The grant will assist the department in funding its annual Kids Fire Academy, Junior Fire Marshal Program, and other fire prevention and education activities, according to a news release from the Fire Department.

Arkansas ranks second in the United States in the number of fire fatalities, the Fire Department news release said.

Club sets annual membership tea

The North Little Rock Woman's Club will have its annual membership tea Aug. 3 at the Woman's Club House in Burns Park at 401 W. Military Drive.

The event is scheduled from 1-3 p.m.

The tea is a way for women in the community to learn more about the nonprofit, volunteer service organization that organized in 1958. The club's objective is development of fellowship among residents and their assimilation into civic life and social activities of the community.

The club holds activities throughout the year to raise money for programs in North Little Rock, including scholarships for North Little Rock High School students.

More information is available by contacting club president Helen Greenfield at (501) 835-5019.
