Markel Foreman is proof that Little Rock Parkview produces more than outstanding basketball players.

Foreman, a 5-10 guard for the Patriots, was a star in the classroom all four years at Parkview, compiling a 4.8 grade-point average and earning a scholarship at prestigious Washington University in St. Louis, where the acceptance rate is only 15.6 percent.

NOTEWORTHY Born July 21, 1997. … Son of Markel Foreman and Kwashunda Watson. … Scored a 29 on the ACT. … Named a Presidential Scholar. … Sports Illustrated 2015 Student Athlete of the Year nominee. … A member of the National Beta Club, French Club, Chemistry Club and Robotics Club.

“It felt amazing when I got the word that they had accepted me,” Foreman said. “It was my first choice and the school I wanted to attend since I first started looking at colleges.”

Foreman seemed to get better in the classroom with every year. In his final nine weeks, Foreman took six Advanced Placement classes and made A’s in all six.

“The hardest class was physics,” Foreman said. “But it was also fun. We did a lot of hands-on activities and we did a lot of work in the lab. … Physics has a lot of different concepts, and that’s what made it so difficult.”

At Washington University, Foreman plans to major in chemical engineering.

“I’ve been interested in engineering for the last three or four years,” he said. “I like to build stuff and take stuff apart. … I’m undecided on what I eventually want to do, but I know what it’s going to involve.”

Foreman knows what it is like to play for a winner. The boys basketball program at Parkview has won 12 state titles.

Foreman will play basketball for the Bears, a NCAA Division III team which finished 20-6 and advanced to the national tournament last season. Foreman said he also considered offers from TCU, Rhodes College and SMU, but said Washington “felt like home.”

“I went to watch a scrimmage and they all made me feel like I was already a part of the program,” Foreman said. “Everyone on campus made me feel as if I was a part of a family and that’s the kind of atmosphere I want to be around.”
