Students from Northwest Arkansas are among the 14 outstanding high school seniors chosen to enter the University of Arkansas Honors College Path Program this fall. The Path Program is a new Honors College initiative that helps talented high school students from underrepresented populations succeed at the University of Arkansas by pairing them with peer and professional mentors.

Eduardo Puente from Centerton is a recent graduate of Bentonville High School. He plans to be an international business major in the Sam M. Walton College of Business. He is the son of Luis and Lorena Puente of Centerton.

Brian Magana from Siloam Springs graduated from Siloam Springs High School. He plans to be a finance and accounting major in Walton College. He is the son of Leonel Magana of Siloam Springs.

Oscar Guzman from Siloam Springs, a recent graduate of Siloam Springs High School, plans to be an industrial engineering major in the College of Engineering. He is the son of Lourenco Guzman of Siloam Springs.

UCA

The University of Central Arkansas recently announced that approximately 1,130 students will receive academic scholarships starting in the fall. UCA awards six different academic scholarships to first-time entering freshmen based on high school GPA and ACT/SAT scores.

Local students awarded scholarships include:

Bethel Heights: John Lampson, Distinguished $34,000

Cave Springs: Lauren Dexter, Achievement $20,000; Allissa Martindale, Achievement $20,000

Decatur: Whitney Goates, University $12,000

Gravette: Lindsee LaBrecque, Achievement $20,000; Megan McAfee, Achievement $20,000

UCA also released the list of graduates from commencement on May 2. Local graduates include:

Bentonville: Rachel Burge, Bachelor of Science; Mary Chandler, Bachelor of Science; Nathan Jones, Associate of Arts; Melissa Mortimore, Bachelor of Science; Hannah Moulder, Bachelor of Arts; Adam Seal, Master of Arts in Teaching; Sara Sharos, Bachelor of Arts; Ryan Widen, Bachelor of Music

Decatur: Blake Wilkins, Bachelor of Science

Furman University

Cassidy Sykes and Katie Sykes, both graduates of Fayetteville Senior High School, have been named Furman University Scholars at the university in Greenville, S.C.

Students selected for the program were nominated by their high school guidance counselors and were chosen for their strong academic potential, leadership and commitment to extracurricular activities and community service.

If Furman Scholars apply for admission and are accepted to Furman, they will receive at least $7,500 in merit-based scholarships per year or $30,000 over four years.
