LPGA star better stick to punch shots

Lexi Thompson injured her wrist punching a photographer during a photo shoot in February, but that didn’t stop her from wining the LPGA Meijer Classic on Sunday and moving to sixth on the 2015 money list.

Lexi Thompson is a really good golfer who uses boxing as part of her training.

National Baseball Hall of Fame inductee Pedro Martinez speaks during Sunday's induction ceremony at the Clark Sports Center in Cooperstown, N.Y.

She might consider hanging up the gloves.

Thompson, 20, was appearing for a Golf Digest photo shoot in February, when she was asked to throw a few punches at an interviewer who had a camera mounted on his head.

Thompson obliged, hitting Conde Nast Entertainment producer Tony Hernandez with a barrage of punches that sent Hernandez to the ground.

Thompson, however, didn't come out of the ring unscathed, suffering a deep bone bruise in her right hand, an injury that has lingered throughout the season.

Thompson's agent, Bobby Kreusler, told GolfChannel.com that the injury has turned into tendinitis.

All of which makes Thompson's victory in Sunday's Meijer LPGA Classic all the more impressive.

Thompson finished one stroke ahead of Gerina Piler and moved to sixth on the LPGA money list with $862,974. In 15 events, she has three top-five finishes and seven top-10 finishes.

Thompson said she believes the injury came from the interview and photo shoot, which included a controversial topless cover in which she was partially covered by a towel.

"It did happen boxing in the Golf Digest photo shoot," she said. "I'm not really a boxer, apparently."

Burying the lead

The Chicago Cubs are accustomed to losing, but getting no-hit is a different matter.

Cole Hamels of the Philadelphia Phillies became the first pitcher in almost 50 years to throw a no-hitter against the Cubs in a 5-0 Phillies victory Saturday at Wrigley Field.

@Cubs, the team's twitter handle, was left scrambling for something positive to tell its 586,000 followers.

Here's what it came up with: "Dexter Fowler walks twice in loss to Phillies."

Taking high road

ESPN fired talk-show host Colin Cowherd for comments he made last week about players from the Dominican Republic not having "world-class academic abilities."

Major League Baseball demanded an apology.

Hall of Famer pitcher Pedro Martinez took a different tact in responding Cowherd's rant.

"I'm sorry," Martinez said. "He needs to get to my level to answer him. I'm in the Hall of Fame."
